Utah is home to top-rated rock climbing areas, and rock climbing has become a multimillion-dollar industry over the last couple of decades. The folks who were inspired to begin climbing and mountaineering in the 1950s pioneered Utah routes and helped develop this sport. There has been ongoing work by Utah State University and the University of Utah to preserve the history of outdoor recreation, and now the Utah Historical Society (UHS) has received climbing gear to preserve and share. Members of early Utah climbing clubs, such as the Alpenbock Climbing Club and the Ute Alpine Club, have donated gear they used in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.
