It is easy to miss the former Snow Field Station in Ephraim, Utah, despite the fact that it can be seen just east of Highway 89. What remains of the station is nestled amid new building projects and a city park, but unless someone knows what they are looking for, this modest cluster of abandoned poultry sheds and other worn-out structures is practically invisible to casual passersby. Not that many people noticed it while it was operating, however—the Sanpete County community at large was scarcely aware of its existence.

The unassuming nature of the Snow Field Station, both past and present, belies the fact that for fifty years it was home to a vibrant cooperative enterprise involving one of Sanpete's most important agricultural resources: turkeys. The station provided a place for researchers and local turkey growers to collaborate on important turkey-raising innovations. Its work also energized the local agricultural economy....
