The founding of the Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1911 was one of the first steps taken by the Mexican government in positioning itself on the world stage and, in particular, toward its neighbor to the north while also seeking to strengthen areas of interest to both nations. Although Mexico and the United States had maintained a close relationship for years, at that point in history, the political interaction between countries needed to evolve. Mexican diplomats were fully resolved in their intentions to strengthen ties, yet the situation in the interior of their home country greatly limited their ability to act. By examining the founding of Salt Lake City Consulate within the context of both nations, it becomes more evident how significant its opening was and the powers that were exercised by the diplomats and consuls involved.
