Abstract
The purpose of this article is to shed additional light on the hopes, conflicts, and struggles of the Polish diaspora in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through an analysis of views on education, religious life, and fraternal organizations of the American Polonia presented in a popular weekly, the Wiarus, between the years 1886 and 1902. It is also to introduce Hieronim Derdowski—poet, journalist, and publisher—as a subject worthy of wider scholarly research and discussion.1
