Doris and Russell Lee: A Marriage of Art
Mary Jane Appel is a photographic historian specializing in 1930s American social documentary photography and the work of the Farm Security Administration (FSA). For the past twenty-five years she has worked with image collections at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, and Texas State University. Notably, she was a member of the Library of Congress team that catalogued and digitized the FSA-OWI Collection for online access. Appel has published essays and web text on the FSA and her forthcoming Russell Lee biography will be published by Liveright (a division a W.W. Norton) in association with the Library of Congress.
