Shawn Hale completed his undergraduate work at the University of Illinois in Springfield in 2006, majoring in history. He earned an M.A. in history in 2016 at Eastern Illinois University, majoring in European history and minoring in American history. He works for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign.
