BLACK BY GOD | The West Virginian (BBG) is a multi-genre weekly online newsletter, quarterly print newspaper, and website established in the midst of the protests over George Floyd's murder in the summer of 2020. The brainchild of publisher, artist, entrepreneur, and activist Crystal Good, BBG originated as a Substack (an e-newsletter) that was transitioned into an official website and paper publication—with a new newsletter platform, Letterhead—in 2021 with the support of the Tiny News Collective. Good is a member of the first cohort of the collective, which provided $15,000 capacity-building stipends to each participating organization (Tiny News Collective 2021). In 2021, Good also graduated as a 2020–2021 New Start Fellow from the New Start program, a joint initiative from the West Virginia University Reed College of Media and the West Virginia Press Association aimed at entrepreneurs interested in starting and operating a news publication.
