The Carter Family Fold Memorial Music Center, also known as the Carter Family Fold, is located in Hiltons, Virginia. Established by Janette Carter in 1974, the space was created to preserve old-time music. Janette Carter was the daughter of A. P. and Sara Carter, who were two members of the original Carter Family trio. The other member of the original trio was Maybelle Carter, also known as “Mother Maybelle,” and together these three are often referred to as “the first family of country music” (Carter Family Fold 2022). Some even may be familiar with their contribution to country music thanks to the 1927 Bristol Sessions.
The Carter Family Fold is unique because it preserves the legacy of old-time music by offering Saturday night shows each week—March through November—at the memorial music center. Since the goal is the preservation of old-time music, this means that no electronic instruments are played....
