Abstract
While vows are sometimes hard to keep, they may be even more difficult to escape. Because they are often sworn in the name of the Deity, of some other divine being (angel or saint), or of a sacred object (such as Solomon’s signet ring), vows tend to have a sanctity which intimidates would-be violators. Turkish storytellers explore ramifications of such dilemmas.
