Motor City Music: A Detroiter Looks Back
Jazz from Detroit
ALEXANDER GAGATSIS is a jazz scholar and musicologist. His most sustained research is centered on Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, which he examines as a form of situated cognition. In so doing, his work explores ways in which performance is situated in activity bound to social, cultural, and physical contexts. Gagatsis maintains a strong interest in diasporic forms of jazz and, through a combination of ethnographic and archival methodologies, is currently exploring the impact of South African musicians to the British jazz scene.
