On April 8–9, 2022, a group of scholars gathered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to participate in the Forty-Fifth Annual Ancient Philosophy Workshop, which was organized around the theme of Socrates, Socratics, and Sophists. The workshop itself was initiated almost half a century ago by the Joint Classics–Philosophy Program in Ancient Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. In the intervening years, the event has grown from its modest beginnings to a conference that regularly draws experts in ancient philosophy from across North America and even around the world.

The UT Austin campus continues to play host to the event in most years. Relatively early in the workshop's history, however, it also became part of the tradition to invite friends or alumni of the UT joint program to host occasional iterations of the event at their home institutions.
