Abstract
In this article, I examine the use of Jesus’s personal name in the penitent criminal’s appeal at the crucifixion scene in Luke 23:42. I consider what can be confidently asserted on the basis of the vocative Ἰησοῦ in the criminal’s appeal and propose that the use of Jesus’s personal name in Luke 23:42 might entail an allusion to the etymology and meaning of that name.
