In the summer of 2016, I returned to the Grace Deliverance Center in Akropong, Ghana, to conduct follow-up research to my first book. While I was there, the US Democratic National Convention was taking place in Philadelphia, building toward the nomination of Hillary Clinton as the democratic candidate for president. I would watch various clips of the convention between trips to the Deliverance Center and conversations with the Prayer Warriors, who worked at the center. I was surprised to learn how invested these Pentecostal Christians were in the US election. I was frequently asked which candidate I supported. Unflinchingly, I would say Hillary Clinton. Without getting into the all the reasons I felt that Clinton was the superior candidate, I would frequently discuss Trump’s overt racism (and this was before he referred to African nations as “shit-hole countries” in January 2018)—thinking this might resonate with my audience. It did not....
