ABSTRACT

Sir Thomas More's Utopia strongly influenced the formation of American ideology, which is an amalgam of American utopian theories and utopic European philosophies such as those brought to America by groups as well as individuals escaping the tyranny of philosophical, and at times physical, abuse. In addition, the founding laws established to govern the people in the United States seem to be strongly rooted in the theories presented in More's Utopia. References to the influence of More's Utopia on American literature are also included. This article deals with the circulation of utopian ideals in America and looks at the American translations of More's masterpiece. It further offers a selected list of studies on Utopia.
