I respond here to Congdon's 2014 response to my 2012 essay on Bultmann and Augustine. I argue that although Congdon offers a useful account of Bultmann's theology and ecclesiology on its own terms, he does not sufficiently relate this to the question of the relationship between biblical interpretation, ecclesiology, and the social nature of knowledge, which I find to be well articulated by Augustine. I critique Bultmann's application of justification by faith alone to epistemology, which seems to underlie his reticence about the possible epistemological significance of ecclesiology. And I suggest that Bultmann's program for theological interpretation, although it has enduring depth and challenge, is nonetheless significantly limited as a resource for contemporary theological interpretation.
