David J. H. Beldman is a professor at the Missional Training Centre in Phoenix, Arizona and the director of the Kirby Laing Centre North America. He has published on Ecclesiastes, including co-authoring A Classified Bibliography on Ecclesiastes (T&T Clark). He is the author of a commentary (Eerdmans), a monograph (Eisenbrauns), and a popular book (Lexham) on Judges. He has published essays (print and online) on the Bible and biblical interpretation, especially in relation to how the Bible speaks today.

Abstract

This essay explores the question of the role and character of God in the book of Ecclesiastes. The essay identifies the places in Ecclesiastes (especially in Qoheleth’s discourse) where God appears as a topic of discussion, attempts to classify these passages, and analyzes them in light of the whole. The essay also explores and evaluates the surprising absence of God in Qoheleth’s discourse.
