ABSTRACT
In this article, I seek to clarify the meaning of the church as a plausibility structure for theological interpretation of Scripture, a thesis I initially advanced in a 2012 JTI article on Bultmann and Augustine. My approach is to make the clarification by responding to a misrepresentation of my thesis in a 2017 JTI article by David Congdon. Congdon advocates Bultmann’s understanding of the church as an eschatological community to be a preferable alternative to my thesis. I set out my indebtedness to the work of Lesslie Newbigin, and suggest that Newbigin is of more help than Bultmann for the task of missional translation of the gospel in the contemporary world.
