In the May 1, 1966, issue of Time magazine, eminent Swiss, neo-orthodox theologian Karl Barth famously urged Christians to “Take your Bible and take your newspaper, and read both. But interpret newspapers from your Bible.” A pithier, popularized version of the quote circulates among preachers, adjuring them to “hold the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other.” Blogger Geoff Sinibaldo has updated the chestnut with “We must hold the Bible in one hand, and our hand-held device in other – filled with Twitter feeds, Facebook updates, blog subscriptions, news articles from a variety of sources and perspectives, societal studies, and local gossip” (Sinibaldo, “On Barth, the Bible and the Newspaper,” March 5, 2015, sinibaldo.wordpress.com).
