When the television show How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) was winding its way down in 2014, fans, including myself, were in a tizzy. The showrunners had long teased the last line of the last episode, making it public knowledge that the show's last scene had been filmed early in its nine-year run. The ending was not, then, just a wrap-up of the series—it was the revelation of a long-held secret about which fans had been speculating for almost a decade. I was a fan, but I could not bring myself to watch the last episode, even with its promised revelations. There were two reasons: I did not want the show to disappoint me at the same time I did not want the show to end. I had a lot of feelings.
