ABSTRACT

Transhumanism is a political agenda according to which we should deploy the means provided by the sciences to change human nature to meet our ends. Reactions to the transhumanist agenda range from naïve endorsement in one corner, to naïve rejection in the other. Some assume that it will inevitably lead to utopian heaven, others that it will lead directly to dystopian hell. These extreme reactions to the transhumanist agenda, however, are often due to unclarity and imprecision with respect to the ends that the transhumanist is said to have in mind. To avoid this vagueness, I start by clarifying what I call a moderate thesis of transhumanism. Once this thesis is clarified, I present an argument in favor of moderate transhumanism that is based on the concept of compassion.
