ABSTRACT

Anton Ulrich, an Afro-Caribbean man from St. Thomas, is usually remembered as the instigator of Moravian mission work. After he met Moravians from Herrnhut in Copenhagen in 1731, he traveled to Herrnhut. His accounts about the desire of the enslaved in the Caribbean to hear the gospel allegedly encouraged two men from Herrnhut to travel to St. Thomas. This article attempts to uncover details about his life, based on archival records in Denmark, Germany, and the United States.
