As a doctoral dissertation this book opens up a new line of research. At the same time, however, it is far from being the first step toward the realization of a long-term project, the foundations for which were laid no later than the 1980s by the Bamberg philosopher Erwin Schadel. At that time he compiled his Bibliotheca Trinitariorum—a bibliographical listing intended to provide a similar basis for Trinitarian thought as had already been available for many years to its opponents. In the light of this survey, Comenius appears as an important figure who presciently supported a well-founded defense of the ontological Trinity more or less right at the start of the dispute in the early modern period, when Unitarianism was gaining strength—a defense that was intended to influence the conception of the Enlightenment. Schadel therefore had good reasons for preparing at the same time an edition of ten treatises...
