In this issue of Methodist History, I’m providing a printed version of a lecture given to the Southeast Jurisdiction Cabinet in January, 2023. It is part one and two of four lectures given in which I detail the history of Wesley’s self-proclaimed submission to “be more vile” and craft a renewed sense of Wesleyan vile-tality to challenge the continuing United Methodist Church to reclaim its roots.
