KRISTEN VON GONTEN is the Director of Nurture at Salado United Methodist Church in Salado, Texas. She completed her Master of Arts in Ministry at Southern Methodist University, Perkins School of Theology, where she is also currently completing a Master of Theology degree. Kristen has recently been approved for commissioning as a provisional Deacon in the Central Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church. Her areas of interest are church history, bioethics, and intergenerational ministry.

ABSTRACT

This article explores the life and ministry of Emma Stone Poteet Pilley in her own words through her letters home. Pilley was a missionary with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in both Japan and China in the early twentieth century. The article considers her life before and during her time as a missionary, her possible reasons for entering the mission field, and her various experiences of life in two different countries far from her small, rural Texas upbringing.
