The Mediterranean Voyage: the concept covers a wide range of meanings, including voyages in the Mediterranean, to the Mediterranean, from the Mediterranean, within it, and, especially, of it. The Mediterranean itself is a moving concept, a shape-shifting icon of a place that is constantly reconfiguring its own space. What the Mediterranean signifies, what it can represent, changes incessantly as its boundaries fluctuate, as cultures, peoples, and histories move into it or out of it, as these fragments of the Mediterranean coalesce into the multiple and diverse worlds within it. Yet, for all that its fragments urge it into discontinuity, the Mediterranean persists as a single universe, at times progressing and expanding, but at other times regressing and contracting.

This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Fernand Braudel, and our decision to focus on the Mediterranean voyage in all its senses owes much even now to his 1949...
