ABSTRACT

This autobiographical article examines Sterling Brown’s visit to New Orleans in 1981. In addition to discussing the purpose of Brown’s visit and Black writers’ excitement about it, this article also describes the impact that Brown had on my intellectual development. The article not only describes poetry readings Brown gave and people’s responses to his poems but also the manner in which Brown’s recollection of the New Negro Movement proved invaluable to the current understanding of Black cultural politics.
