This paper examines discourse reference forms (e.g., zero pronouns; the demonstratives i, ku, and ce) in speech of intermediate/advanced level learners of Korean. Referential forms collected from three heritage and three non-heritage students performing a film-retelling task were analyzed with respect to the cognitive, thematic and affective status of the referents in the discourse space. Results show a U-shaped development of zero pronouns and a protracted emergence of ku and i contrasts, arguably due to factors such as crosslinguistic influence and processing and intra-linguistic constraints.
