ABSTRACT
This article argues that the inquisitor Ralph of Ligny, known from a letter to Philip IV of France describing the interrogation of two German Templars in 1307, must also be the “inquisitor of Lorraine” who questioned Marguerite Porete (d. 1310) at about the same time. It then considers some of the implications of this identification and reedits Ralph's letter to Philip IV (Paris, Archives nationales J 413 no. 15).
