Heads or Snails? A Rustic Feast at Hellenistic Philoteria (Tel Bet Yeraḥ, Israel), circa 150 BCE

MIRIAM PINES is a PhD candidate at Tel Aviv University. Her PhD research deals with the material culture, economy, and daily life of the societies in the Central Negev during the Late Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. She is also an archaeozoologist working at the Laboratory of Archaeozoology at the Zinman Institute of Archaeology, the University of Haifa. ALOL DOR is an MA student in the ecology program of Tel Aviv University's School of Zoology, Faculty of Life Sciences. Her research is focused on paleoenvironmental reconstruction and archaeomalacology. She holds a bachelor's degree from the Departments of Geography and of Archaeology at Tel Aviv University. Her current project concerns the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the Epipaleolithic site of Jordan River Dureijat in northern Israel. DANIELLA E. BAR-YOSEF MAYER is a zooarchaeologist specializing in molluscs, who studies both shell and stone beads from archaeological sites. She has been an associate of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University since 1992. At present she is collections manager for palaeontology and archaeomalacology at The Steinhardt Museum of Natural History, Tel Aviv University and a research associate of the Institute of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University. She published over 100 papers on mollusc shells and stone beads from sites in Israel, Sinai, Turkey, and Eritrea. SARIT PAZ, PhD, is a teaching fellow in the Unit of Culture Research at Tel Aviv University. She is codirector of excavations at Tel Bet Yeraḥ since 2007. In addition, she heads the research and publication project of Kvatskhelebi, Georgia, since 2014. Her research is focused on Early Bronze Age societies in the Levant and the southern Caucasus, early urbanism, houses and households, and the identification of migration and diaspora in the archaeological record. OREN TAL, PhD, is a full professor of classical archaeology at Tel Aviv University. He is the current director of the Apollonia-Arsuf Excavation Project (since 2007) and codirector of the Tell Iẓṭabba Excavation Project (since 2019). His research interests concern the material culture of the classical- and medieval-period Near East and its social, political, and economic implications from the mid-first millennium BCE to the early second millennium CE. RAPHAEL GREENBERG is associate professor of archaeology at Tel Aviv University.
