Abstract

In my year as a Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) Mellon Mediterranean Regional Research Fellow, I visited four countries—Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan—for my dissertation research on ancient Egyptian living-rock stelae. Each of these countries afforded me unique and sometimes sobering experiences as a scholar, a field researcher, and an American abroad. In this personal reflection on my fellowship term, I recount some of the encounters that left lasting impressions on me. These experiences would not have been possible without the support of CAORC.
