This article seeks to show one kind of relationship between Gestalt therapy theory and the organization of poems, with a view to enriching our experience and understanding of both. Specifically, it purports to relate the process of particular poems to the contact cycle as developed in Perls, Hefferline, and Goodman and to the layers theory as developed in GTV. It then applies these concepts to five individual poems as a way of reading, analyzing, and understanding the kinds of psychological actions they represent. And the hope is that this analysis will enable the Gestalt concepts to be appreciated more concretely and deeply as well.
