Abstract

An investigation of a new construct labeled "transfluence" was conducted through item generation and factor analysis, as well as convergent and discriminant validation. The item responses of 155 adult participants were analyzed. A set of principal components analyses was conducted with orthogonal rotation to the VARIMAX criterion. Transfluence emerged as a 23-item orthogonal factor. Individuals scoring high on transfluence scored high on a self-report measure of mystical experiences. Additionally, transfluence evidenced discriminant validity with a measure of Gestalt resistance processes.
