zachary wright (Ph.D., history, Northwestern University; M.A., Arabic studies, American University in Cairo; B.A., history, Stanford University) teaches history and religious studies in the Liberal Arts Department at Northwestern University in Qatar. He teaches classes on Middle East history, African history, Islamic intellectual history, colonialism and decolonization in the Muslim world, and Islam in America. His research interests include Islamic knowledge specialization and transmission, Muslim reform movements since the eighteenth century, and North and West African Islamic history. His current book project is titled Knowledge in Being: Islamic Learning and Transformation in West Africa. He has also translated several West African Arabic texts, most prominently The Removal Confusion of the twentieth-century “Shaykh al-Islam” Ibrahim Niasse (Fons Vitae, 2010).
