This is one of several recent translations of Poe’s tales into Polish and the second revised translation published by Dr. Sławomir Studniarz, a scholar who specializes in American literature. It can therefore be compared with the first translation of Poe’s tales made by Dr. Studniarz,1 as well as with a recent similar publication edited by Maciej Płaza and beautifully illustrated by Harry Clarke.2
These two latest Polish translations of Poe’s short stories can be classified as being typically bibliophile editions. Both are published in hardcover with added plates containing famous illustrations. In the case of the Marginesy edition, in addition to Clarke’s work, there are also illustrations by Arthur Rackham, Robert Lawson, and Jean-Paul Laurens, to say nothing of small yet significant decorative elements that are most pleasing to the eye.
