Abstract
A long-lost January 3, 1842, essay titled “A Critical Jack Ass” (appearing in the New York Evening Tattler) constitutes a lengthy condemnation of Edgar Allan Poe's Graham's Magazine review of Henry Cockton's novel Stanley Thorn. This newly recovered piece constitutes further evidence of the sometimes overheated response that Poe's frank and incisive critical commentary prompted. The authorship of this piece is unknown.
