Patrick D. Murphree, an independent scholar living in New Orleans, received his PhD in Theatre History, Theory, and Literature from Indiana University, Bloomington. His main research interest is the use of theatre as social mediation during and after the French Revolution. This paper reflects his additional interests in the theatrical performance of gender and sexuality and in the intersections of theatre and religion.
