A Note on the Prologue to Sor Juana's Sueño
Elias L. Rivers (born 1924 on Gullah-speaking James Island, near Charleston, SC) attended the municipal high school and College of Charleston and (after military service in the CBI theater of operations, having learned Chinese at Georgetown University) earned BA, MA, and PhD (1952) at Yale. While teaching at Dartmouth, Ohio State, Johns Hopkins, and SUNY Stony Brook, he published various editions and studies in Spanish Golden age literature (principally poetry). He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (1959–1960) and the Nebrija Prize (1992). He married Georgina Sabat Mercadé in 1969 and retired with her to Miami in 1992. eliasrivers@comcast.net
