I have at least forty modern critical commentaries on the book of Job on my shelves. The last decade alone has produced several massive and some masterful works on Job, including commentaries by C. L. Seow (2013) and Víctor Morla (2017), along with a new translation by Edward Greenstein (2019). The volumes by Seow and Greenstein are only a prelude of more to come, and Melanie Kohlmoos’s 610-page commentary (IEKAT) is due to be published by Kohlhammer in 2023. Against the backdrop of a mountain range of Job scholarship with its many breathtaking summits, how much could yet another commentary possibly contribute? Witte’s new volume answers: a lot.
