In his book Gift of the Grotesque: A Christological Companion to the Book of Judges, Daniel Stulac invites the reader to immerse themselves in the messy, often grotesque reality of human life on display in the book of Judges so that they may encounter Christ in that mess. Unlike a traditional commentary with verse-by-verse exposition, the goal of the book is to provide a broader, theological perspective on the book of Judges that places Christ at the center. In the preface to the book, Stulac provides notes to the reader on how to engage with this brief but valuable book. He says that the goal of the book is “to kickstart a textual wrestling match between you and the crucified God” (p. ix), a goal that Stulac accomplishes on every page.
