Simon Gathercole suggested at the 2015 meeting of the British New Testament Conference that what distinguishes the four canonical Gospels from apocryphal gospels is not primarily literary features, or even apostolicity per se, but apostolic content. This article makes a similar argument with respect to the book of Revelation and its relation to other early Christian apocalypses, namely that what distinguishes the canonical Apocalypse from others is its reliance on an Old Testament worldview.
