The Vocabulary of the Septuagint and Its Hellenistic Background (VSHB) is a collection of 11 articles on the Hellenistic background of the vocabulary of the Septuagint by contributors to the Historical and Theological Lexicon of the Septuagint (HTLS), edited by Eberhard Bons (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck). HTLS is a multivolume dictionary containing detailed studies tracing the usage of about 500 Septuagint words and word groups, and the first volume (alpha–gamma) of 990 pages was published in 2020. The book that is the topic of this review, VSHB, is intended to introduce the reader to the methodology and value of the larger dictionary, demonstrating some of the methodological issues that cannot be dealt with in detail in the dictionary.
