The immensely popular and useful Basics of Biblical Hebrew now has a third edition. I have taught beginning Hebrew from three different grammars, and I can confidently say that students can successfully learn Biblical Hebrew through all of them, with the right instructor. The key issues in selecting a grammar, then, are whether a professor will be confident in the grammar’s approach and, perhaps most importantly, whether the grammar is student friendly (not easy). I continue to believe Pratico and van Pelt offer the most student-friendly grammar on the market (this review includes comments on the workbook, video lectures, vocabulary cards, and other supplementary materials).

The changes in this third edition will have little impact on professors who were not fans of the second edition. For those who thought there was too much information in each chapter in the second edition, the third edition is marginally longer. For those who...
