The present work is a slightly revised dissertation accepted at the University of Zürich, Switzerland, in 2016, under the supervision of Jörg Frey. At the outset, the author attributes the lack of research by Paul (though she notes that Bultmann also spoke of a “profound theological kinship between John and Paul”). The author’s thesis is that both Paul and John developed their concept of “life” against the backdrop of antecedent traditions (cf. Hab 2:4; John 11:25–26). Unfortunately, however, she immediately sidesteps questions as to the source behind the theology of John’s Gospel by adopting an agnostic stance toward its authorship (p. 3 n. 1), though later she says she views the Gospel as the product of a “Johannine school” with different authors and editors combining diverse traditions and positions (p. 36).

This is unfortunate because this sort of approach unduly sidelines historical questions in favor of literary and theological questions....
