New editions of Tatian’s Pros Hellēnas (Oratio ad Graecos) have been proliferating for some time: after the editions of Molly Whittaker (1982, Oxford Early Christian Texts), Miroslav Marcovitch (1995, Patristische Texte und Studien), and Jörg Trelenberg (2012, Beiträge zur historischen Theologie), Heinz-Günther Nesselrath, professor of classical philology at the University of Göttingen, presents his own edition of the Greek text and translation. His edition of the Greek text stands between Marcovitch’s edition with its frequent conjectures (90% of which Nesselrath rejects) and the editions of Whittaker and Trelenberg, whose reluctance to interfere in the text preserved by the manuscripts resulted in a text that is often unsatisfactory.
