Other than knowing that I wanted to focus on American literature, when I arrived at the University of Connecticut in 1990 to pursue my PhD I had no clear idea of what I would be selecting for my dissertation topic. For my master's thesis I had written on the short stories of Bernard Malamud and developed a fascination with the literature of the Holocaust. Having always had a deep love of theater and being assigned the excellent Brenda Murphy as my advisor, I was feeling drawn more and more toward drama, and so I first considered a dissertation on Holocaust drama and began reading as many plays as I could that could be seen as connected to that event.
