This special issue contains an intensive collection of articles from talks given at the 7th International Workshop on Tropical Marine Environmental Changes held in Guangzhou, P.R. China on 23–24 November 2013. This workshop has been successfully held seven times since 2002, hosted biennially by the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography (LTO, Formerly LED), of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Also included in this issue is one contributed article on the topic of sediment phosphorus forms and levels in tropical floodplain wetlands.

The workshop mainly discussed changes occurring in tropical marine environments, focusing on physical dynamics, air-sea interaction, climate change, environment and ecosystems. Presenters aimed for an understanding of the relationship between the Asian monsoon and environmental changes in the South China Sea (SCS), as well as their interactions with the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans.
